There are few things quite as horrible, debilitating, and detrimental as anxiety. Be it because of work, school, relationships, or anything else, excessive stress can spoil the little time we have on this giant spinning rock called Earth. Now, anxiety is in a way unavoidable. Each one of us will experience it at some point in our lives to varying extents. But that’s precisely why it’s so important to learn how to properly deal with anxiety and mitigate its adverse effects on our lives.
While this article is in no way providing any medical advice, following is a list of activities that people around the world are using to help better deal with anxiety.
TRY ANTI-STRESS TOYS
We are starting with something that may seem trivial – anti-stress toys. These little gadgets are designed to alleviate stress by…being fidgeted with. You might be surprised, but anti-stress toys are as effective as they are simple. Psychiatrists broadly affirm the soothing properties of all kinds of fidget spinners, anti-anxiety rings, and stress balls.
If you feel a general sense of unease daily, you should seriously consider investing in anti-stress toys. (not in a stock market kinda way but in a… you know… self-improvement kinda way).
GET INTO COLORING BOOKS
Coloring books? Aren’t those for kids? Well, yes, kinda. While coloring books are usually rather infantile, there are also loads of coloring books made specifically for adults. These are less childish yet just as engaging and fun to color in as any traditional coloring book.
If that sounds like something that might help you let off some steam, try it ASAP!
GET A PET
If you’re an animal lover, this one’s for you. Researchers agree that animals can alleviate anxiety (and many other mental health problems for that matter!). Whether it be a cat, a dog, or even a goldfish, having an animal companion by your side will make even the most stressful situation at least a tiny bit more bearable. If you don’t have a pet already, get one!
LOOK FOR PRACTICAL SOLUTIONS
If you know the exact source of your anxieties, this one’s a must. Say you have a problem at your work. Your boss is putting too much on your plate and you can barely handle it. One way to try to deal with this rather stressful situation would be to find as many practical solutions to the problem as possible. Think about exactly how you can approach your boss and confront the problem. Think about whether you can ask any of your coworkers for a hand. In a more extreme case, you might even think about quitting your job. Now, it’s crucial to keep your cool during the process. You have to you stay as rational as possible when thinking about potential solutions. If you let your negative emotions take control, you’ll end up stressing out even more.
This kind of “thought exercise” will help you internalize that the problem you’re experiencing has an end and that there are tangible ways to stop whatever it is that’s stressing you out so much. Also, the very fact that you’re more prepared and that you’ve already thought through the problem time and time again will make any kind of definite confrontation more manageable.
TALK TO SOMEONE
You shouldn’t face any problems alone, especially those concerning your mental health. Your brain can be your biggest ally, but it can also be the source of negative thoughts and emotions. If you don’t find someone who will check you (in other words, curb your overthinking), you’ll end up in a vicious loop.
Who can you talk to? Well, it has to be someone you can trust, someone you know has your best interest at heart. Someone from your family, a good friend, or your partner are all a good fit.
Now, if you’re have a very hard time, it might still not be enough. Once you’ve exhausted all “simple” solutions, it might be time to go see a specialist, someone with proper training who’ll know exactly how to approach your particular case. Of course, even that will not automatically fix everything. It is the first step though, a first step you have to take if you’re serious about dealing with your anxiety.
TAKE A WELL-DESERVED BREAK
Life can be overwhelming. There are so many expectations we have to meet at any stage of our life. We have to get good grades. We have to go to a good University. We have to find a job as soon as possible. We have to find a partner. We have to stay in a toxic relationship. We have to keep on with the daily grind even if we’re at our breaking point. Heck, we even have to have the newest model of the iPhone.
Well, I’m here to tell you that you don’t have to do any of that. Your mental well-being will always be more important than anything else. If you genuinely feel overwhelmed by it all, just take a breather. Quit your job if it’s eating your soul alive, or take a break from Uni if you feel like you’re on the verge of collapsing under the pressure. You can even start living a minimalist lifestyle. Of course, this solution is rather… radical. You can’t make this lightly. My point is that taking a well-deserved break has to be one of the options at your disposal. Even if you never end up, say, actually quitting your job, just the fact that you know that you can do it will make your life ten times easier.
There’s More..
It doesn’t end here; be creative. Every person is unique. You want to be a child again? Go to the public playground and enjoy the swings and the seesaws. Or maybe just sit in and do some journaling. Or maybe just put your phone in the drawer and leave social media for a day or two and see how you feel. The possibilities are infinite.
